Daily Surf Report - 5/31/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“A person is not given integrity. It results from the relentless pursuit of honesty at all times.”- Unknown

Happy Birthday Rikster!  Festivities will take place in the water and on the beach at the Patch.  We are working on shuttle service to keep the bi-pedal wear and tear to a minimum.  Gifts and donations to the Human Fund are welcome and can be left at the shop for later distribution.

Overcast, foggy and S winds start the morning - no bueno.  Hope for clearing skies and easing wind throughout the day but that remains to be seen.  Temp creeping in at 52F and an overall misty / moist morning.  S swell looks to have eased off and NW windswell remains active.  Tide still heading to a negative low but the turnaround will start soon and the later part of the day has good water levels.  Generally mixed up and sloppy at the moment but it is the weekend and summer is almost here so make you way to the beach and join the party for Rik - EVERYONE is welcome.

CHANNEL:  A pod of 8 surfers on it like maggots as the tide bottoms out and the sandbars expose.  Shifty and slappy in the knee high size but they are making it work so it could work for you as well.  Groin bar looks to work best with the low water levels and Seadrift bars may like the NW windswell direction.  Take a chance on glory and paddle out.  Remember - the worst day surfing always beats the best day working.  Yewwww.

PATCH:  Too low and too small this time.  Bottoming out tide in preparation for the big RIK birthday party.  Saving up energy and water for the incoming tide push.  The S has eased off but still should show here when the tide rises.  Right now choppy and ankle high goodness which no one is riding?!?!  Plenty of rocks to pick and explore but surfing here will have to wait until later in the day.

Daily Surf Report - 5/30/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.”- Karl Popper

Overcast but calm morning with no wind and an initial temp of 54F.  Should eventually see sunny skies but it will gradually arrive.  Still have that pesky negative low tide in the early morning putting a clamp on some of the surf.  NW windswell is predominantly showing yet the S swell on the buoys seems to have improved a bit.  Will need higher tide to see if this pans out in the Patch but for now the Channel has something to work with.  It is all in your minds eye today.  Make something out of nothing and cherish every wave.

CHANNEL:  Tide working its way back now but plenty of sand and shallow conditions prevail.  A few scattered lefts to ride in the Groin bar region and while size is small at thigh high the shape is good and a couple rides are long.  Micro-sliders for sure but enough push with the incoming tide to get the longboard moving in the right direction.  About 7 in the water and it should improve with more water as the day rolls on.

PATCH:  Smooth as silk and soft to boot.  A goodly amount of exposed rocks and a few took out a few boards yesterday - keeping the ding repair crew busy.  Have your head on a swivel and know your bottom contours for best results.  Just occasional wave action in the calf to knee high range and a few SUPs of note on it with 2 loggers out the back as well.  If the S swell has juice we'll see it here in a few hours when water levels rise.

Daily Surf Report - 5/29/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.”- Karim Seddiki

Good morning sliders and gliders. Once again we are greeted with a beautiful morning here in Bolinas.  Full sun, no wind and temp clocking in at 54F.  Shaping up to be warm.  Just NW windswell and a meager background S today but combo potential exists.  Negative low tide working its way back up to sea level.   Let your mind run rampant with the possibilities and go surf already.

CHANNEL:  Low water but incoming tide is trying to give it that extra push.  Groin bar lefts have decent waiting periods but rideable, glideable lefts will appear.  Holding steady and knee to thigh high in size and a group of 10 sitting hard on this spot already.  Looks like plenty of sharing going on when waves arrive.  Inner bar Mali-Bo needs a bit more water but likes these conditions so keep an open eye and mind and maybe sit inside a bit to sample the rights when they show.

PATCH:  Super low and just as slow today.  Most if not all rocks exposed with the low tide and not enough water to creep in over the reef yet.  If that S has any juice left it will show here but that wont be till the afternoon when water levels are up.  Currently a few ankle breakers here but change is possible.  Empty lineup now but a few of the barnacle crew are giving it the evil eye.

Daily Surf Report - 5/28/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“Nothing will work unless you do." - Maya Angelou (RIP April 4, 1928 - May 28, 2014)

Good morning humanoids and androids of all shapes, sizes and odors. It's another beautiful morning here at the beach as that lucky 'ol sun is up and grinning like it won the lottery. The temperature is slinking in at a deceptively cool 56 degrees, but that may have a lot to do with that pesky wind that has already begun to blow as cool as Miles Davis on 'Kind Of Blue' (one of the absolute greatest recordings ever made of any genre). There is a little bit of a lumpy bump in the drink this morning, but this wind and tide is trying to play the "Fun Police" and wreck the party. More later if it changes.

CHANNEL:  It looks as if that Mali-Bo middle bar is attempting to sound-off over here this morning with waist-to-below emerald colored fun wedges. The tide is still a bit too low but wait it out a little bit and this could be your Miki Dora moment today. Tangy-er than government cheese, I tell ya! No one here as of yet.

PATCH:  Slower than a sleeping sloth on cough syrup but the Patch is burping up a below waist short run way out by the Rock/Bulk Head/Meeting Rock. It rolls for about 50 yards then hits that hole and goes back to sleep. If the wind stays down a bit this could be the spot for logs and those air craft carriers you need a giant spoon for.... Only Gentleman Hank out there now but Bert & Ernie are in the parking lot suited up and ready to count to 10.

Daily Surf Report - 5/27/2014

We will be closing early tonight but will re-open tomorrow at 9AM

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect." - Mark Twain

Greetings and good morning to all of you sliders of the brine. It's another magnificently beautiful morning here at the beach as the sun is up with a mischievious golden grin as the temperature is sauntering in at a wistful 54 degrees. All of the birds are out and singing in the key of Dionne Warwick and there really isn't much of a wind...yet. The forecast today promises warm temps but increasing high winds here on the coast as the day progresses. As for any swell....well, the near empty parking lot says plenty.

CHANNEL:  Looks like Mickey Rooney on a bender here today...small and sloppy. Sand bars are exposed and the knee (-) poopers that are coming through are stanky and janky. Maybe a little later today but that wind is a coming.... One (1) Barney there now demonstrating to anyone who will pay attention the fine art of the "stink bug" stance.

PATCH:  Knee and below slow-pokes rolling across the very middle of the Clam Patch. Some break, most don't. Like congress, it needs a bit more of a push. Maybe later...? We'll keep you posted with a post. No one here as I write this.

Daily Surf Report - 5/26/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“The soldier, above all other men, is required to perform the highest act of religious teaching — sacrifice.” - Douglas MacArthur - American General And Field Marshal

Happy Memorial Day - a day to remember the men and women who died while serving in our country's armed forces.  Celebrate the freedoms we all enjoy as Americans and honor those that have served.

Sun's out and temp is 58F already.  High pressure system is in play.  NW winds blow.  NW winds rip.  NW winds shred.  Hold tight to your loved ones and valued possessions.  Grip that board tight and prepare to take flight.  Stiff winds that are side shore / off shore.  Grooming it up and sanding up the grill as well.  Still have some windswell and lingering S swell in the water but the wind has started fairly strong and has put quite a bit of texture on the ocean.  Potentially rideable if you can navigate to the beach and incoming tide water levels add a positive dimension to the day.  Shred while you can.  Glide if you like.  Take advantage of the day off and enjoy the holiday with family, friends and crystals.

CHANNEL:  Somewhat protected from the wind and showing small surf in the thigh high level.  Incoming tide push helps on the Mali-Bo and Channel bars this morning.  Not much doing on the Groin bar and Seadrift looks to have a few small rights to ride as well.  Definitely some texture with the wind but a nice day especially for getting sand in your face and mouth.

PATCH:  Exposed to more wind and chopped up.  Occasionally breaking waves in the knee to thigh high size but plenty of sideways winds on it already.  The fearless are making the journey and big logs can navigate the chop to find nirvana on the water today.  Tide filling in keeps the rocks at back so giddy up if you so desire.

Daily Surf Report - 5/25/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
"Believe you can and you're halfway there." - Teddy Roosevelt

It's another beautiful morning out here in this sleepy little town with the air temp at 55F and warming up. Winds are calm and the birds are chirping as this Memorial Day weekend comes into full swing. Up and down the beach there are peaks breaking with a moderate NW ground and wind swell. Expect the winds to build throughout the day but stay fairly moderate overall. Come on down and try out that fish you've been waiting to ride, or that log you just bought last week, or even an alaia that you made in your backyard. Whatever your choice of watercraft, today is the day to go out and shred it... or at least give it a shot.

CHANNEL:  The tide is coming up and there are a few rideable peaks in the middle channel over to seadrift side. Working in the thigh-waist range as of now and may shape up a bit more after the tide shifts. Slight texture on the surface, but a handful of logs are out and taking turns getting anything that comes their way.

PATCH:  Breaking way outside and slowly rolling in and reforming to line up down the reef in classic fashion. Waves are in the thigh+ range and peeling as about 15 guys glide effortlessly in a conveyor-belt of logs. Just don't paddle too far out and let the waves come to you. All rocks are hidden with the higher tide, but don't let them slip from your mind today as they will be re-exposed later this afternoon. Hurry up before the lot fills and the crowd outnumbers the waves.

Daily Surf Report - 5/24/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“Continuous effort not strength or intelligence is the key to unlocking our potential.” - Black Elk - Lakota Chief

Balmy early morning at 55F with sunshine working its way into our atmosphere.  Shaping up to be a great Memorial Day weekend with sun and warm temps overall.  Currently calm and winds have remained light to moderate into the afternoon.  A bit more NW windswell but the S has steepened up the angle a bit.  Let your imagination run wild today and sample all that Bolinas has to offer.  What are you going to do when all spots are breaking with rideable surf conditions?

CHANNEL:  Incoming tide providing a few rideable peaks at Mali-Bo and on the Channel bars.  Too much water will slow it down but for now it is working.  Size runs from thigh to thigh + this morning but the ocean is glassy and all applicable longboards will do just fine.  With the sandbar movement that has occurred it is worth a look-see at Seadrift for that SPECIAL wave.  Scattered surfers numbering about 6 now and expect more later.

PATCH:  S swell has a steeper angle today but still bouncing off the reef and filtering in to the Patch this morning.  Pop up peaks and rolling rides to be had inside, middle and outside above the meeting rock.  Best waves go waist - in size but that works for today.  Smoothness is evident and all rocks remain covered and comfortably resting.  About 8 in the water currently with the parking lot filling up and the wall jockeys making their plan for the day.

Daily Surf Report - 5/23/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars.” - Les Brown

Overcast again but balmy and calm.  Glassy conditions and serenity reigns supreme.  Still have some NW windswell and the start of a new SW swell as well.  Direction is good for Bolinas and there are fun waves to be had.  Go Biz Markie style today and bring a friend to share the stoke.  Slide and glide your cares and troubles away then attack the day with a vengeance.  Currently 54F.  No sun yet and may not show til later.  We don't need the vitamin D today as the tides are good and the weekend is on the horizon.

CHANNEL:  Just a few small pulses here on the last of the incoming high tide.  Best bars are in the Channel and that water may be too deep right now.  A couple of thigh high lefts off the Groin bar but few and far between.  I know Seadrift is out there in the fog and investigation may be worthwhile for small drainers to ride.  Lots of sand has migrated and the ocean surface is smooth and inviting.  Outgoing tide may peak it up a notch.  Stay tuned.

PATCH:  SW swell direction rolling in to the Patch this morning.  Smoothness on the surface and rolling rights are being ridden.  Size goes thigh to waist but with the tide up the wave can stretch and run towards shore so a few long rides are available.  All crystals are focused here today and it should have surf all day.  Currently about 8 in the water.

Daily Surf Report - 5/22/2014

CLOSING EARLY TONITE AT 5:00pm.
WE WILL OPEN TOMORROW AT 9:00am

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.” - Ernest Hemmingway

Misty morning yet magical nonetheless.  Should eventually burn off and show sunshine but for now cool, calm and quiet with a sneaky temp of 55F.  Finally some water in the morning for the early crew and glassy / small surf conditions prevail.  Still getting a little hit of NW windswell while the S is fading away.  Some spots feeling it more than others but you can get busy on a longboard if you want.

CHANNEL:  In the Channel proper (where the sandbars have moved) there are waves that are rideable.  At this locale today there are rights and lefts to be ridden and with the start of the out going tide it is starting to stand up.  Size is waist high or better and a few look really good.  As the dropping tide speeds up the deep water in the Channel will rip this wave to shreds but for now it works and about 5 are on it with reckless abandon.

PATCH:  Not feeling it today.  Nothing but hope and future promise for a new S swell to arrive.  Very nearly flat with just the semi-occasional knee high right on the inside.  Not even the SUP or NUP crew is out there today.

Daily Surf Report - 5/21/2014

CLOSING SLIGHTLY EARLY TONIGHT. WILL RE-OPEN TOMORROW AT 9AM.

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“I like cheese with a frosty beverage." - Unknown

Good morning to all of you sliders and gliders and welcome to the middle of the week. I certainly hope all is well with you as you are reading this while sipping your coffee/tea/absinthe/bourbon. Let's look and see what we have for you today, shall we? The sun is fighting harder than Danny 'Little Red' Lopez to free itself from the confines of this marine layer that is actually starting to burn off as the temperature is meandering in at an acceptable 55 degrees. None-the-less, the birds are all out singing harmonies in the fashion of The Holmes Brothers. There is also a stiffening, on-shore breeze billowing in that has textured the waters surface, so we'll keep an eye on that as well. If things do change and they always do, we'll keep you posted right here.

CHANNEL:  With this out-going tide it looks more like a watery, moving sidewalk in reverse as the "waves" that are coming in at waist high level are getting pimp-slapped into sectioning messes. I'd personally wait until the tide turns around, but if you're impetuous and need something now then I say enjoy your morning here at camp Slapaho. One (1) person out now getting...well, slapped.

PATCH:  Yesterday is gone and today is here and the Patch is struggling to keep any semblance from yesterday's wave party. What does come through is a slow-poke, thigh-high gurgler AT BEST from the middle of the Patch. With this on-shore wind that is building and the out going tide.... whew. I'd apply the "wait and and see" policy today. Four (4) there now... looks like Los hermanos Bradley, DB the wonder surfer and one unidentified.

WE WILL BE CLOSING A BIT EARLY TONIGHT. WE WILL RE-OPEN TOMORROW MORNING AT 9AM.

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“The past isn't dead. It's not even past." - William Faulkner

Good morning to all of you practitioners of the slide. It's another fantastic morning here at the beach. Ooh, la la the sun is up and grinning that 1000 watt smile, replete with the gold toothed display as all of the birds are singing that Tower of Power classic, 'What Is Hip?" ala Lenny Williams! There is a bump in the water and a chump writing about it on this blog. Ah, surfing.... almost as good as a brand new Cadillac and a winning lotto ticket.

CHANNEL:  A waist high rolling emerald is trying to get things started here but that tide is lower than a snakes belly crossing over a tortilla. It's really screwing the pooch at the moment. Wait until the tide swing and BOO-YA! This will be the place, I betcha!

PATCH:  DAAAaay-am! Houston, we have lift off! It's breaking in the waist (+) neighborhood way outside of the Rock/Bulk Head/Meeting Rock clean and glassy. And, like vintage Earl "The Pearl" Monroe it's breaking left and right! A mix of surfboards and janitor boards out there now. WOOO!

WE WILL BE CLOSING EARLY TODAY BUT WILL RE-OPEN TOMORROW AT 9AM.

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“People always ask me,'Were you funny as a child?' Well, no, I was an accountant." - Ellen DeGeneres

Good morning purveyors of the glide. It's another week in paradise and yet the sun is taking it's time to 'rise and shine' this morning as the temperature is moseying on in at a respectable 56 degrees. As I write this nothing is broke...so, as my grandfather used to say,"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

CHANNEL:  The tide is lower than Bill Buckner can bend over to field a routine grounder. This means that the sand bars are exposed so much that all they are missing is a couple of palm trees along with Tom Hanks and a volleyball. However, when this tide turns about I'll betcha' this could be the spot.

PATCH:  Well, lookee here! The good 'ol Clam Patch is producing a thigh-to-waist high roller outside of the Rock/Meeting Rock/Bulk Head almost as much as hipsters are keeping Pabst Blue Ribbon in business. Seven (7) out there now on logs and janitorial gear.

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“Don't ever give up. Don't ever give in. Don't ever stop trying. Don't ever sell out. And if you find yourself succumbing to one of the above for a brief moment, pick yourself up, brush yourself off, whisper a prayer, and start where you left off. But never, ever, ever give up.” - Richelle E. Goodrich

Hello earthlings and welcome Sunday morning.  We are overcast with patches of sunshine but balmy at 57F with no wind yet.  Expecting partial sun and partial surf as a new SW swell starts to fill in and a small NW windswell adds to the mix.  Grab the Little Lebowski Urban Achievers and find your way to the beach today.  If it is working on the negative low tide it should work even better with actual water covering the bottom.  Just an amateur uneducated guesstimate on our part.

CHANNEL:  The tide is hitting rock bottom and I mean below sea level lows this morning.  Plenty of exposed sand bars and other unmentionables this morning so shield your eyes until the turnaround.  There is a bit of swell that should give you something to ride here but just a bit too low to really have shape and ferocity.  3 in the water battling the bottom for knee high mushburgers that are short and sweet on this beautiful day.

PATCH:  Patch Peelers in the thigh + range that are popping up here and there as the water levels allow.  Plenty of rocks UN-encumbered this morning and a few boiling just below the surface.   Nonetheless there are some rideable waves here and it should only get better when the water fills in.  Good tides throughout the later part of the day and the swell direction works as well.  Fingers and toes crossed and crystals rubbed together for a day of positivity, peace and peaky waves.  5 in the water now.

Daily Surf Report - 5/17/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“Some people never go crazy, what truly horrible lives they must lead." - Henry Charles 'Hank' Bukowski

Good morning to all of you creatures of the brine. Another spectacular morning here at the beach this fine spring day. The sun is being a tad shy today as it's busy pouting behind some high cumulus but I'm sure it'll come out to play, just like Dear Prudence later today. The temperature is squeaking in at a comfortable 55 degrees and that pesky wind is blowing like Dizzy Gillespie. It's supposed to reach the mid-to-high 60's here today so bring layers and ALWAYS pack the sun block. The surf is in the minuscule range right now but the tide is still on the run going out in a negative fashion -------->
So, don't touch that dial as I'll keep you posted right here for any changes later.

CHANNEL:  The tide is still out, but will be on the turnaround soon. The sand bars are out and exposed looking like a chain of small islands. Could be the spot a little later today. Right now it more resembles the infamous Mariachi Speed Metal Clog Dancing duo of 'Slurpy & Sloppy.' No one here doing anything as I write this.

PATCH:  Thigh-ish crumblers that roll very-slowly for a little ways then poop out like a sumo wrestler running a mile. Granted the tide is WAY out right now but with the turn-around we'll see what develops later. Only the 'Wonder Surfer' DB and the 'Strongest Woman in the World' Francine are out there now trying their best.

Daily Surf Report - 5/16/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” - Joshua J Marine

Marine layer moved in last night to cool things off.  Brought with it some onshore wind which is putting a bit of funk on the surface this morning.  Farily drained out low tide providing a confluence of factors keeping it marginally surfable at best right now.  There is a SW swell in the water and it should hold throughout the day.  Water levels need to come up and winds need to stay low to get things improving.  There are still some waves to surf and if conditions change for the better we will report it here.

CHANNEL:  In the Channel proper a couple of nice looking lefts in the knee to thigh high range were observed.  Holding shape and good for the longboard.  Low tide makes it easy to get to and stand as well.  Not much at the Groin to ride and Seadrift is always worth a look or investigation.  Better than the last few days with the new swell and you can surf if your board is long.

PATCH:  Still best out at the meeting rock and waves size remains thigh +.  Swell has filled in but water levels have not.  Lots of rocks exposed and it will take a few hours to cover things up.  Wind is still light so if you have the time there are a few waves.  Later will have better tides but expect the winds to come up and possibly blow things out.  About 8 in the water here now.

Daily Surf Report - 5/15/2014

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“Strive to be first: first to nod, first to smile, first to compliment, and first to forgive.” - Anonymous

Impending S swell and nice weather brings the surfers out to the beach like ants to an unattended picnic.  We do have beautiful and windless weather with temp at 55F an another warm day expected before a cooling trend sets in.  We don't have very much water with a negative low tide still filling in.  We do have a moderately steep S swell filling in so keep your focus on the Patch as it should improve throughout the day.  Otherwise there is plenty of beach and sand to roam a romp.  Lots of sunshine and general niceness to be appreciated today.

CHANNEL:  Not much here and looking like knee high and below when something rolls through.  Low water levels starting to fill back in.  Sandbars across at Seadrift may deliver more shape but size won't change much there either.  Swim or surf - it is your call.  Empty lineup.

PATCH:  Out at the meeting rock and a bit further outside the S swell is showing with smooth and surfable waves of the thigh to maybe waist high variety this morning.  More water and a swell that will fill in during the day should keep this spot working today.  Power Mouse has given the thumbs up and that report is good enough for anybody.  Bring the big board and ride, glide and slide.

Daily Surf Report - 5/14/2014

Closing a tad early tonight. We will re-open tomorrow morning at 9AM.

Inspirational crystal quote of the day:
“To do a dull thing with style-now that's what I call art." - Charles Bukowski

Good morning to all of you water keepers, van sleepers, and wave peepers! Yet, another bee-u-tee-ful morning here at the beach. That temperature is squeezing in a 56 degree reading, but we all know that will hit the mid-80's later today with very little effort. Yep, the sun is up wearing only three important things; sun glasses, a fiesta red thong and a smile! The birds are up and singing in the key of Nick Drake and all is right with the world... almost. More teeny-to-flat surf to report today. It all could change later in the day but I have the sneaking suspicion that a little bump in the H2O is on the way... maybe tomorrow... maybe the weekend. Don't touch that dial! We'll be right back after these messages.

CHANNEL:  Below knee white-water-rollers with sand bars so exposed it'd make a flasher in Golden Gate Park blush. Again, maybe later in the day or most likely a little later in the week. No one here as I write this.

PATCH:  VERY occasional, below knee slow-poke outside of the Rock/Bulk Head/Meeting Rock that travels maybe 50 yards then does what the Patch does on days like this... it disappears. Though that isn't stopping six (6) desperate commuters (3-logs and 3-janitor boards) from suiting up and almost surfing. Again, maybe later...?

Musings from the surf shop guy: To all of you "surfers" out there. If you're itching to come out to the beach and surf because it's sunny just like in all of the groovy surf movies but there isn't any surf, you should realize that by driving all the way here it isn't going to make the surf magically appear. There are a couple of things that actual surfers know and do. These days it's incredible with all of the technology available as you have countless, free websites to access that can assist to inform you if and what is happening at the beach. Some sites are pretty good at this (CDIP), others are not (Surfline). Another thing, know the spot! Know what kind of conditions work here and which don't. Swell directions, tides, storms, etc. Also, it NEVER hurts to follow the weather and their patterns...that's how we did it "way back in the old days,"(aka, before 2000). Lastly, don't come into the shop staring at the wax and asking how the surf is. You only have another 500+ steps to go to do an actual "surf check." Spend a minimum of ten (10) minutes looking at the water and seeing if anything is breaking, how often and where. Putting in the time makes you an even better surfer.
